Ivy Tech Northeast announces new dean for the schools of Business, Fine Arts & Design

Novak,Elaine

Novak

Ivy Tech Community College Northeast is pleased to welcome Elaine Rankin Novak as the college’s new dean for the schools of Business and Fine Arts & Design. She begins her role at the college Aug. 16.

Novak’s experience has taken her from Kansas and Texas to California, Central America and more. Ivy Tech marks the seventh community college system she has worked for, in addition to experience in a wide variety of fields, including marketing and management, state government, commercial real estate and the American Embassy.

Most recently, Novak served as Illinois Valley Community College’s dean for Career and Technical Programs. She was also a part-time faculty member, teaching software-based courses in business technology.

Novak completed her doctorate of education, in educational leadership, at Arkansas State University, where she also received a Specialist in Community College Teaching with an administration emphasis. Her master’s and bachelor’s degrees—in business administration and business education, respectively—are from Emporia State University, in Emporia, Kan. She has an associate of arts from Kansas City Kansas Community College.

As Ivy Tech Northeast’s business dean, Novak will oversee seven programs in the School of Business and one in the new School of Fine Arts & Design. As an educator, Novak prioritizes partnering education with the business community, she says. Her focus has long been assisting adults in their initial contact with higher education or with a second-career education path.

Ivy Tech Northeast names finalists for 2013 New Venture Competition

Ivy Tech Community College Northeast has announced the three finalists of its 2013 New Venture Competition. The competition, in its third year, rewards the student with the best business plan with at least $20,000 in start-up money.

The finalists and their plans are as follows:

  • Robert Bibbo, whose American Combat Veteran Clothing is a clothing line designed and made by combat and disabled veterans. “The purpose of this business is to get as many of the nation’s disabled and combat veterans back to work as possible,” Bibbo writes in his business summary. Bibbo is from Fort Wayne and studies Computer Information Technology.
  • Faith Maslonka, whose Outdoor Gear Fitters allows people to rent camping gear. Campers can choose Gear Pacs to fit their needs, be they novice or expert campers. “Our innovative website and fair pricing make an otherwise costly expense affordable and convenient,” she writes in her business summary. Maslonka is from Anchorage, Ala., and is a General Studies major.
  • Adara Fath, whose photography business Addie Fath Photography specializes in lifestyle portraits. “My service delivers a gift to preserve people in our lives, to share our stories throughout time,” she writes in her business summary. Fath is from Fort Wayne and studies Business Administration.

“Our student-entrepreneurs presented a wide range of business models, demonstrating creativity and excellent marketing research,” says Jim Tolbert, who heads the competition. “The finalists explained their competitive advantage and breakeven analysis, with a strong financial plan, indicating they are ready to launch their new venture.”

A winner will be announced at the New Venture Awards Dinner at 5 p.m. Sept. 19 on Ivy Tech’s Coliseum Campus, 3800 N. Anthony Blvd., in room CC1640. The awards banquet will feature a presentation by the finalists.

The New Venture Competition is sponsored by JB Tool, Die & Engineering and owner Dave Bear.

Chad Craig walk/run to benefit Ivy Tech Foundation for student scholarships

When Chad Craig, a local man with cystic fibrosis, died in May 2009, his family and friends started the Charles “Chad” Craig Memorial Scholarship Foundation.

The scholarship foundation needed one more fundraiser to hit its $10,000 endowment goal, and thus, the Chad Craig Fun Run was born. All money will serve as scholarships to benefit students in Ivy Tech Community College Northeast’s Respiratory Care program and one senior in cross country at Fremont High School, where Chad was a runner.

The one-mile walk/5k run will take place at 9 a.m. Aug. 3 at Angola Middle School, 1350 E. Maumee St., Angola. To register, mail your name, signature, date, full address, phone number, email address, birth date, shirt size and emergency contact information, to Candace Biernat, 1565 W. Maumee St., Angola, IN 46703. The entry fee is $20, and checks can be made payable to the Chad Craig Scholarship Fund.

Entrants can also register online, at runrace.net. To guarantee a shirt, registration is due by July 20.

The show is free to college employees and $2 for the public. Children younger than 10 get in free.

The event is expected to draw more than 500 car enthusiasts from around the country, including Louisiana, Tennessee and Washington state. Ivy Tech Corporate College to offer training for commercial driver’s licenses

Key Information

  • CDL training new to Ivy Tech Corporate College summer 2013
  • Students can receive licensing in as little as eight weeks
  • Need for CDL-trained drivers expected to increase through 2020

This summer, Ivy Tech Corporate College will begin to offer commercial driver’s license, or CDL, training. It will consist of classroom time, hands-on driving time and pre-trip inspection and lab work.

The eight-week classes are scheduled to run from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday starting July 15 at SIRVA’s Fort Wayne office, at 5001 U.S. Highway 30 West. During that time, students will receive classroom instruction and a driving/lab time.

“This type of collaboration between business and education is exactly what we need to create a demand-driven workforce in Northeast Indiana,” said John Sampson, president and CEO of the Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership. “SIRVA and Ivy Tech are to be commended for moving the ball forward to meet the needs of logistics companies in the region.”

Nationally, the need for heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers is expected to increase over the next seven years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The bureau projects a need for 21 percent more drivers from 2010 to 2020—more than 330,000 employees.

“The shortage of qualified men and women to drive trucks exists in northeast Indiana just as it does elsewhere in the U.S.,” says James Aschliman, executive director of Ivy Tech Corporate College. “We are proud to be providing high quality training for those desiring to enter into this industry.”

This program will cost $3,995. This covers instruction, materials, Department of Transportation physical, application for learner’s permit and license. Program fees also cover students’ first attempts at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles skills test. The CDL class will be offered on a regular basis. For more information or to register for CDL information sessions or instruction, call 260-480-4118.

Ivy Tech Northeast instructor’s story available on Amazon.com

Ashe

Ashe

Ivy Tech Community College Northeast instructor Paula Ashe has published her short story, “The Mother of All Monsters,” on Amazon.com. The story is available for purchase via Kindle download.

The story originally appeared in “Serial Killers Iterum” (“Iterum” is Latin for “again; for the second time”), which was published last year by the Indianapolis press James Ward Kirk Fiction, a publisher for writers of horror, crime and science fiction. The anthology includes stories from writers across the country.

“A lot of people want to read my work but don’t want to buy the whole collection,” says Ashe of her decision to self-publish the story.

Ashe has had stories in other James Ward Kirk Fiction anthologies, including “Indiana Science Fiction 2011,” “Indiana Crime 2012” and “Indiana Horror 2012.”

Ivy Tech Northeast admin to represent college in D.C. forum

Ivy Tech Community College Northeast administrator Martha Martin, International usdsInitiatives coordinator, will participate in the fourth annual EducationUSA Forum from June 26 to 28 in Washington D.C. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the forum will include 500 college and university recruitment and admissions professionals and nearly 60 EducationUSA educational experts from around the world to discuss study abroad opportunities.

Ivy Tech was asked to participate because its “initiatives to internationalize students, faculty, administrators and the community are remarkable,” according to EducationUSA, which pointed to Ivy Tech’s project-based learning programs as an example.

“By welcoming international students and encouraging U.S. students to study abroad, we enhance the competitiveness of the U.S. educational system,” according to EducationUSA. “Not only do higher education institutions connect future global leaders with the American people, foreign students also have a positive economic impact on the United States.”

The U.S. education sector represents the fifth largest U.S. services export and added nearly $23 billion to the U.S. economy in the 2011-2012 fiscal year.

Martin will serve on a panel titled, “Drop the Pin: Community Colleges Add Locations to Their Global Map.”

EducationUSA is supported by the U.S. Department of State and includes hundreds of advising centers globally. The group provides millions of international students with information on applying to U.S. colleges and universities every year.
