Fort Wayne Campus announces spring 2018 schedule for enrichment classes

This spring, Ivy Tech Community College’s Fort Wayne Campus is offering eight IvyLiving classes for the College and community. IvyLiving is a personal enrichment program that provides non-credit classes to promote personal growth. Local and regional experts teach these classes, which can target any age or be geared toward specific populations.

Valentine’s Date Night
Skip the busy restaurants and crowded rooms to spend an evening cooking with your sweetie on Valentine’s day. Our chef will teach you how to create a steamy surf and turf menu with sides, wine pairings, and a decadent dessert. Single? There’s nothing better than laughing over food and wine with your bestie on Valentine’s day. Registration deadline: Feb. 5; $200/couple, $125/single

Adulting 101
This can be a three-part series, or classes can be taken individually.
Adulting is tough, but we can make it easier through Adulting 101. There’s no need to learn life’s lessons the hard way: Let us teach your teens and young adults the basics of home ownership, car purchasing, and financial planning. Better to figure it out with us than after you spend too much on a junker. Series registration deadline: Feb. 9; $275/series

Class 1: Houses 101
Your house is likely the biggest purchase you’ll ever make. Let our construction expert help you out. He’ll teach you all about the housing market, financing, and home inspection. Then, once you’ve moved in, you’ll need to maintain your space: We’ll teach home maintenance including weatherizing; staying green; basic electric, plumbing, and HVAC repair and renovation; and when to do it yourself vs. when to hire a professional. Registration deadline: Feb. 9; $125

Class 2: Cars 101
Buying a car isn’t all fun and games. It can be expensive and stressful! We’ll walk you through what to look for, how to negotiate price, financing, and insurance. Plus, we’ll teach you basic car maintenance including how to change a tire, how to check and change your oil, and “What does that sound mean?” Registration deadline: Feb. 23; $100

Class 3: Money 101
Feel as financially competent as Bill Gates once you understand the basics of the not-so-basic retirement planning, health insurance, investments, and debt. It might sound intimidating, but we can make it as simple as Monopoly money. Registration deadline March 2; $100

How to Boil Water
“I could burn water.” If that sad statement resonates with you, this class is calling your name. We’ll help terrible cooks improve their skills with the basics of knife techniques, kitchen and food safety, and key cooking methods to help you create delicious and healthy meals at home. We’ll give you the confidence to take on the food processor and show the stove who’s boss. Registration deadline: Feb. 23; $125

Wine Tasting and Pairing
Join WineTime owner, Jeff Armstrong, for a crash course in wine appreciation. You’ll taste wines from around the world and learn about the history, processing, and intricacies of the wine world. In your second class, you’ll pair wines with a one-of-a-kind meal created by Ivy Tech students. For ages 21+ only. Registration deadline February 15; $125

Spring Break Classical French Cuisine Camp
Your young chef will spend the week learning the intricacies of classical French cuisine, including traditional cooking methods, knife skills, food safety, and terminology. They’ll work along Ivy Tech instructors and students in Ivy Tech’s professional kitchens. At the end of the week, you’ll join them for a French meal created and served by your budding chef. For ages 12 to 16; registration deadline March 23; $265 for public, $240 for Ivy Tech employees/students

Artistic Welding
Watch the sparks fly during your two-class adventure in metalsmithing. Start with a beginner’s lesson on welding safety and techniques by Ivy Tech’s certified welding instructor Brian Barnes. During the second class, create one-of-a-kind take-home art in the College’s modern welding lab. Registration deadline April 7; $125
