Ivy Tech Fort Wayne to celebrate first-generation students at College/ community event

WHAT:
TRIO Student Support Services at Ivy Tech Community College’s Fort Wayne Campus is hosting the First-Generation College Student Celebration. The event, which is open to the public, will highlight the college experience of students who are the first in their families to attend college.

The celebration will feature a panel with a first-generation student and College faculty and staff, as well as music and lunch.

If you would like to highlight a first-generation student at the Fort Wayne Campus, you can contact Phyllis Lomanto at plomanto@ivytech.edu or 480-452-2959. Lomanto, who is studying Health Information Technology, is a first-generation college student and the president of TRIO’s Leadership Council.

TRIO offers services to students who are first-generation or low-income, as well as those with disabilities. The concept of “first-generation” students was introduced into federal policy by the TRIO community in 1980 during passage of the Higher Education Amendments to the Higher Education Act of 1965.
