Ivy Tech Community College−Northeast student and Phi Theta Kappa member Grover Diemer has been named a 2013 Newman Civic Fellow and also received the Most Outstanding Chapter Member Award at PTK’s regional conference March 16 in Indianapolis. PTK is the international academic honor society for two-year college students. Ivy Tech–Northeast’s PTK chapter is Alpha Tau Xi.
Diemer is a Human Services major who has devoted himself to helping others. He volunteers at the Fort Wayne Rescue Mission and the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Fort Wayne, as well as participating in several campus and community activities. Diemer’s career goal is to become a counselor.
The Newman Civic Fellows Awards are sponsored by Campus Compact, a national coalition of nearly 1,200 college and university presidents—representing some six million students—who are committed to fulfilling the civic purposes of higher education. Newman Civic Fellows are named in memory of Dr. Frank Newman, a founder of Campus Compact, who dedicated his life to creating systemic change through education reform. The award is made possible through the KPMG Foundation.
According to Campus Compact, Newman Fellows represent the next generation of public problem-solvers and civic leaders. They serve as national examples of the role that higher education can—and does—play in building a better world. Campus Compact selected 181 community-engaged college students as fellows from 36 states in 2013. Ivy Tech–Northeast Chancellor Jerrilee K. Mosier, Ed.D., is the board chair for Indiana Campus Compact.
In addition to Diemer’s awards, Ivy Tech–Northeast’s Alpha Tau Xi chapter received three additional awards: the Five-Star Development Award, an Honors-in-Action Issue Award for the chapter’s “Food Fight!: Competition & Food” submission and a Power-of-Progress Chapter Award for its promotion to a Five-Star Chapter.
