The Indiana Commission for Higher Education (CHE) has approved Ivy Tech Community College–Northeast to offer both an Associate of Science and an Associate of Applied Science in Visual Communications that will be available beginning in January 2013. The program—which is also offered at the college’s Central Indiana, Columbus/Franklin, Kokomo, North Central, Southern Indiana, Southwest and Wabash Valley regions—gives students experience with computer illustration, design, interactivity and photography. Courses emphasize both the technical and aesthetic elements of good design, providing students with the skills necessary to work in the design industry.
“We are thrilled to be able to offer the Visual Communications degree program at our region,” said Erin Salyers, program chair of visual communications. “This addition is a great educational opportunity for those in northeast Indiana who are either interested in gaining employment in the exciting world of design or transferring to complete a bachelor’s degree in Visual Communications.”
Students will develop advanced skills and knowledge in their particular field of interest. The program prepares graduates for the world of work by developing real-world internship and design exhibit opportunities. Visual Communications students will also develop a professional print and media portfolio that will be critiqued by local industry representatives. Visual Communications offers an arena with a variety of creative and technical career opportunities. These include working for publishing companies, advertising agencies, web development firms, photography studios, among others.
