Ivy Tech Community College−Northeast is honoring Domestic Violence Awareness Month through a series of events on campus during October. The culminating event will be the Domestic Violence Survivors’ Courage Celebration at 5 p.m. Oct. 24 in the Coliseum Campus Auditorium (3800 N. Anthony Blvd.)
The celebration will honor the courage of domestic violence survivors and their supporters. A Service Provider Fair will be held prior to the celebration from 1 to 4:30 p.m. in the Coliseum Campus Auditorium. The fair will bring awareness to area agencies where assistance for those affected by domestic violence is available. The fair and celebration are free and open to the public.
Dottie Davis, Fort Wayne deputy chief of police, will be the keynote speaker for the celebration on Oct. 24. She has traveled the nation to train thousands of law enforcement officers, prosecutors, advocate and judges on responding to and preventing domestic violence. She is also a survivor.
“The celebration helps encourage participants to celebrate the courage of domestic violence victims and the strength needed to survive or help others survive the effects of domestic violence,” said Chris Garrett, Department of Labor grant coordinator. “We are especially pleased to have Dottie Davis as our keynote speaker this year.”
Other events to celebrate Domestic Violence Awareness Month include “Chalk it Up” Oct. 2 at the Student Life Center on North Campus (4900 St. Joe Road) and Oct.9 at Coliseum Campus. There will also be screenings of “Telling Amy’s Story” 11 a.m. Oct. 11 in the Coliseum Campus Auditorium and 5 p.m. Oct. 18 in the Student Life Conference Center.
Over the past two years, through domestic violence awareness efforts, information has been distributed throughout Ivy Tech’s campus. These events have helped students, staff, faculty, community agencies and community members to better understand the issue of domestic violence and what resources are available.
