Ivy Tech Corporate College and Easter Seals Arc are hosting a ceremony to celebrate the more than 70 graduates of the “Learn to Read” program. The completion ceremony will be 6 to 8 p.m. May 17 in the Student Life Center gymnasium on Ivy Tech’s North Campus (4900 St. Joe Road). The graduates will be joined by regional students, parents, school administrators and Ivy Tech supporters.
“We have seen measureable improvement in the reading abilities, so we know (the program) is working,” said Donna Elbrecht, president and CEO of Easter Seals. “We look forward to more reading classes and perhaps collaborating with Ivy Tech for other educational experiences for the people we serve.”
The reading enrichment program was announced in August 2011 and classroom instruction, provided by Ivy Tech, began in September.
Major learning objectives of the classroom included:
- Knowledge of the alphabet and the ability to recognize the letters
- Basic knowledge level of phonics skills
- Evaluate knowledge of sight words and compound words
- Determine reading skill level and comprehension level
- Set reading goals and assign reading group class level
This program was partially funded by a grant through the Foellinger Foundation and “Fund the Mission” of Easter Seals Arc’s Vino, Java & Jazz event held in October 2011.
