In late September, students from Ivy Tech Community College Fort Wayne’s Art in the Community class, led by instructor Erin Salyers, began transforming the exterior of Lake Avenue Market at Lake Avenue and Anthony Boulevard into a vivid mural that captures the spirit of the neighborhood.
The mural’s design reflects the heart of the Lakeside Park area, known for its welcoming residents, lively streets, and the iconic Lakeside Park rose garden. It features a row of houses representing the historic homes in the area, an abundance of colorful flowers beneath a bright blue sky, and a bold message near the entrance to the market: “Welcome to the ’05.”
Before paint ever touched the wall, the class used design thinking strategies to research the area’s history and what brings residents pride in their neighborhood. A public survey collected input from more than 80 residents, offering insights and ideas that helped shape the final mural. Every response was read and considered, and common themes emerged to guide the students’ design plan.
With guidance from Salyers and support from fellow instructor Jared Applegate, students spent several weeks bringing the mural to life—brushstroke by brushstroke. The project quickly became a neighborhood event, drawing enthusiasm and encouragement from the Lake Avenue community. Passing cars honked in support, market customers stopped to offer kind words, and even local children added their own brushstrokes to the design.
“The project was truly a collaboration between students and the neighborhood,” said Salyers. “We are thankful the building owner and tenants were on board and supportive of this learning experience for the students. More importantly, we hope it brings joy to everyone who visits this iconic market for years to come.”
The mural now stands as a lasting symbol of teamwork, creativity, and neighborhood pride—a colorful welcome to all who visit Fort Wayne’s 46805 area.
