Ivy Tech Community College–Northeast’s Distance Education office and Ivy Tech Online will host Distance Education Day in northeast Indiana on Wednesday, May 18, from Noon to 3 p.m. at the college’s North Campus (4900 St. Joe Road). The day has been arranged to celebrate the efforts of staff, faculty, and students through online education.
Distance Education Day was established to communicate the importance of online education delivery to Ivy Tech students who, without this option of education, would be unable to reach their educational and career goals. The Distance Education office is also honoring the many faculty who assist with the formation and facilitation of the online courses.
“Distance education courses are meeting needs in our community,” said Deb Ponsot, distance education coordinator. “I often speak to students who are single parents, working full-time jobs to support their children. They want a better life for themselves and their children, and online course work allows them the opportunity to earn a degree and better their lives.”
More than 3,700 students took online courses during the spring semester at Ivy Tech–Northeast, and those students collectively took nearly 7,000 courses.
“In addition to school, I am a busy person with work, a family, friends, and personal time,” said student Bradley Baker. “Online courses have allowed me to achieve my goals of efficient learning and academic excellence. Unlike traditional education, I have been able to attend ‘class’ at any hour and spend as much time per topic as needed to fully understand the material.”
