Interim Chancellor Russell D. Baker of Ivy Tech Community College–Northeast is promoting Friday, June 18 as “Ride Your Bike to Ivy Tech Day” for students, faculty, and staff. The day ‘rides’ close on the heels of the City of Fort Wayne’s designated day in hopes to continue the encouragement of alternative transportation and exercise promoting healthier lifestyles.

Over the last couple years, the City of Fort Wayne has added miles of new bike lanes and other trails making it easier to get from one side of the city to another.

Bicycle tips:

• Look at a street map to see if there is an alternate route to work that uses less busy streets.
• Consider using the Rivergreenway or other trails for transportation. Visit www.fortwayneparks.org and go to the Parks menu on the left side and click on Rivergreenway to find a map of the Rivergreenway.
• Drive to a trailhead and bike into work using a multiuse path.
• For people biking pre-sunrise or after sunset, remember to have front and rear reflectors and lights to increase visibility. Indiana law requires bicycles to have a white headlight and red rear reflector.
• Evaluate bike parking options, including bike racks, or other outdoor structures where a bike can be secured.
• Consider bringing a change of clothes to work.

Information Session on Wednesday, June 16: In preparation for the June 18 event, Paul Spoelhof, senior planner with the City of Fort Wayne who is the mastermind behind the City’s bike plan and an avid cyclist, will conduct a brief information session for interested individuals and discuss the City’s bike plan and bike safety. The session will begin at 4 p.m. in the Auditorium of Ivy Tech’s Coliseum Campus (3800 N. Anthony Blvd.).
