Ivy Tech Fort Wayne Surgical Technology program receives accreditation

Ivy Tech Community College Fort Wayne’s Surgical Technology program is now accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC/STSA). The Surgical Technology program at Ivy Tech Fort Wayne was started in fall 2020, and the first cohort will graduate in 2022 with fully accredited degrees.

This accreditation is vital, as Ivy Tech students are now able to take the NBSTSA (National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting) Surgical Technology Certification Exam that proves they meet the qualifications to work as surgical technologists. Under state law, students are required to pass this exam to practice as surgical technologists.

“Ivy Tech Fort Wayne Surgical Technology students can now take heart in knowing the program they graduated from is an accredited program,” said Colby Scott Allen, Surgical Technology Program Chair. “This accreditation provides the legitimacy our students and industry leaders are looking for in this critical medical field. It shows the value of the degree and the high standards of education each Ivy Tech graduate can claim.”

Knowing there was local industry need for surgical technologists, Ivy Tech Fort Wayne invested significant funds into the program. The College funded extensive remodeling for surgical technology labs on its Coliseum Campus, including mock operating room suites complete with monitors, lights, sterilizers, and other real-world equipment.
